MASTURBATION, FETISHES, AND PERVERSIONS

Is masturbation harmful?

Some experts used to think so.  In The American  Family Physician, an influential reference work published about the  time of the  Civil War, it got this kind of review:

"Masturbation is the production of the venereal orgasm by artificial means. It is a vice by no means uncommon among the youth of both sexes and is frequently continued even into the riper years. It usually retards growth, impairs the mental faculties, and brings on debasement of the human soul and a mind filled with obscenities and beastliness. Cowardice is a striking peculiarity-a masturbator cannot look a person full in the face."

Is it really true that masturbators can't look a  person in the face?

No, it isn't true.
The truth is that nearly every human being from the African  pygmy grandmother to the twenty-year-old blonde movie starlet, from the Japanese teen-ager to the fifty-year-old-British businessman, from the professor of mathematics  to the bum  on Skid Row, masturbates,  has masturbated,  or is going to masturbate.  No matter what anyone says against it-or for it-self-produced orgasms are the missing piece in the sexual jig-saw   puzzle.  It is the first  sexual adventure    of the adolescence, the  better-than-nothing sexual release of the adult years, and  the final sexual consolation   of old age.  Beyond that, "therapeutic masturbation," or  "orgasm-to-order," plays a vital role in overcoming  both male impotence and female orgasmic impairment.  Like  practicing  tennis strokes against   a backboard, in its ideal from, sexual solitaire  is simply playing a one-handed  game to  learn how to  play better  with a partner.

Isn't  masturbation habit-forming?

It sure is.  Like eating, sex, and  being alive, masturbation  tends to grow  on you.  Even the somber old American  Family  Physician grudgingly  admits:  "The  more  the vice  is indulged in, the greater will be the desire to continue it."

With that  kind of  recommendation , masturbation can't be all bad.

Why do people  masturbate?

Well, for one reason, it's handy.  In a way, masturbation is the original do-it-yourself project. Anybody can do it, it doesn't require any skill or equipment-and it's free.  There is no risk of VD, pregnancy, or jealous husbands.  On the debit side, however, there is also no chance of the emotional fulfillment that comes from a warm and loving experience of sexual intercourse .  But at certain stages of a person's life, sexual self-sufficiency plays a very important role:

"Doctor, I'm sixteen now and I'm sure most  of the other  girls in my class would tell you about the same  thing if you asked them.  For the past two years I've  been masturbating  at least three times a week-sometimes, if I feel like it, I  do it every  day.  The most satisfying  way for me is to gently manipulate my clitoris with the heel of my hand.  I usually do it when  I take a bath, but on weekends I like to have a  couple of orgasms in bed before I get  up in the morning.  I enjoy it the most when I've been out on a date the night  before and I can imagine that it's   my boy friend who's playing with me.  I've thought a lot about it and I don't  feel  guilty at all.  I look at it this way:  When  I get married I'll  already know what an orgasm is, I'll  know exactly what I'm  looking for, and I'll  know how much I really enjoy it.  That's  more than a lot of married women can say."

Unfortunately , not every masturbating  adolescent is as free of guilt:
"As an eighteen-year-old who used to masturbate each and every day, I would like to know if four  years of doing it will affect intercourse  with my wife three or four years from now.  I have just  about completely stopped last month and I don't think  I will ever masturbate again.  Please tell me what to do since I am just  starting college  and I am away from   my girl friend and for the first time.  We are very close and I miss her very much."

Most teen-agrs will gleefully discard masturbation just as soon as they begin regular intercourse: "Wow! After playing  with myself for the last  four   years-I'm seventeen-I found a girl who loves sex as much as I do!  I just threw away all my nudie centerfolds that I used to masturbate  over.  Compared to intercourse, masturbation was  just  spinning  my wheels!'

But why do adults masturbate?

For a lot of different reasons.  At this precise moment there are as many as one hundred-thousand adult Americans in the midst of an act of masturbation.  Many of them are women-single, widowed, divorced- who choose it as the lesser of two evils:

"As a single twenty-six-year-old girl, I cannot accept the state of celibacy that society has forced on my body.  I find  masturbation  necessary at the time of the month just  before  my period when I get absolutely  frantic for sex.  However,   I am always very careful to do it by putting one finger in my vagina and my thumb gently  on my clitoris.  I do it that  way for two reasons:  first,   it makes my climax about twice as powerful, and second,  I think it is close   to what my husband  will do to me when I get married. I have thought about getting an artificial penis to make it even closer to actual intercourse but I think I'd rather hold out for the real thing."

Do many women use artificial penises?

Not as many as most  men think. Although porno movies  features  sensational scenes of frenzied  cuties impaling themselves on yard-long pink plastic  phalluses while they stare wide-eyed into the camera, the taste of most women is somewhat less flamboyant. Some ladies are even puzzled about where to start:

"How about including a how-to-do-it section on masturbation  for females?   The taboo against autoerotic is  even stronger for women  than men, and combined with the obvious where-is-it problems- (How in the dickens do you find that  little clitoris?)-It leaves many women  unequipped to enjoy the fruits of their  anatomy.  (Sorry about   that.)"

The lady has a point. The taboo against a woman touching herself plus the two-layered arrangement of the female genitals (labia majora plus labia minora) make the clitoris as hard to find for some women as a parking space in Times Square. Those women who do masturbate often use this technique:

Lying on their  backs  and spreading their  legs   apart, they  gently caress the area from the pubis to the vagina   with the  palm of the hand.  This gradually (or sometimes  swiftly, depending on the circumstances) leads to partial erection of the  clitoris and  secretion of lubrication from the vagina.  With the palm of the hand. At this moment, they usually begin drawing the index finger  upward from the vagina toward the pubic bone to pick up some of the secretion and spread it over the labia minora and clitoris. Then  using one or two fingers they slowly stroke upward  beside  the  now-pouting labia minora, along one side of the clitoris, and back down again.  (Interestingly, right-handed women usually  titillate the right side of the clitoris, while left-handed   ladies keep to the left.) Most women keep away   from  the tip of the clitoris  because  of its extreme sensitivity. As they  begin  to gather momentum  toward orgasm, some girls-usually those who have already had intercourse-accompany clitoral  caresses  with a finger  that slides  in and  out  of the  vagina. Other women will gently  pinch and  squeeze their  nipples, although that  occasionally brings on  a surprise.
