The history  behind damiana begins in Mexico.  The story goes that it was an  old Mexican  folk remedy used to treat various urinary and sexual relieving male menopause prostate problems and impotence.  Even the Maya Indians of Yucatan believed  in the healing benefits of damiana.  They called it mizib-coc, meaning "plant for asthma

Even though there are no known side effects from taking damiana, it is  generally suggested that  you use it for two months, discontinuing usage if no positive effects are noted.  Many herbs  take at least four to sex weeks  to be of any benefit,  so two months  should be enough  time to tell if it is helping you have better sex or not!  Follow the dosing instructions   found on the  label.  There is no set  dosage amount, so if in doubt, start with  a lesser amount and increase if needed.

Cautions

While almost everyone would like to improve their sex life, a little caution is always a good thing.  Damiana is not considered to be a very  strong or potent herb, and there are  really no known side effects.  However,  because there are also no scientific studies  available on damiana, all we know about it comes  from personal  experience  and its  use in history.

There is some information that indicates  that damiana may interfere with iron absorption.  It would  be a good idea, if you give damiana a try, to also  increase your iron  intake.  This can be easily accomplished  by increasing  the iron in your diet.  Foods high in iron include dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, tomato juice, nuts,  red meats, and fruits.  You  may also choose to take extra  iron in supplement  form.  However,  taking an iron supplement  is generally  not recommended for men, since  too much iron in men is associated  with heart  problems.  Ask your healthcare provider to check your iron levels if you have  any questions.

Possible drug interactions

There is no current  information on damiana's having a negative reaction with any other  drugs or medications.  However,  there is some evidence  that it may alter  sugar levels in the bloodstream, so if you  are diabetic or have any other type of problem with  regulating  your blood sugar levels, consult your  healthcare  provider before using damiana.
