‘Thanks, but we’ve only just eaten.’ Alison tempered her refusal by handing Julia the smoke. Then she handed Julia her wine too.
I stood up quickly to Four Julia a goblet of her own. ‘You ate together then?’ I looked down into the dark wells of Julia’s eyes. ‘But you didn’t have time to fill her in on me?’ I was teasing, of course, but Julia shot me an imploring glance. I ignored it.
Fond as I was of Julia, the intense quality of her vulnerability did irritate me. She was fast becoming incontinent in her love for me. That was why I had decided the time had come to operate. That is, it seemed to me that for her own good, as well as mine, I had to take a clinical approach to her problem. I loved her and I missed her warmth when I did not see her, but I had my own life just as she had hers. If she lacked the discipline to keep them separate, then that discipline had to be exercised by me. Alison was looking down into her empty goblet.
‘I’ll get you ,a refill.’ Julia knelt up.
‘No, Julia, let him.’ And her eyes met miner full for the first time. I was tempted not to react, but then I wanted her to feel I was out to please her.
‘Of course.’ I took the goblet. ‘While you roll the next smoke?’
‘I’ll do it. I Julia was already reaching for-chrissake the papers.
‘No, Julia. Let her.’
‘I’m no good at it.’
‘Besides,’ Julia busied herself. ‘I need to do something with my hands to help me unwind. I’ve been so, well, haven’t I, Alison, fraught.’
She went to sit beside Alison on the sofa, shaking back the clouds of blonde hair before she leant forward to the tin of Thai. The hair enclosed her again. Alison lifted some strands and tucked them neatly behind Julia’s ear.
Julia had a pretty face and small pouting mouth. Most things about her were small scale except for her breasts. They swelled forward now as she bent towards the coffee table. In fact it was easy to overlook her face. Indeed, I had done when I first met her. She was just pregnant so her breasts were enlarged. I will admit I sat on the train opposite her and talked to this face up huge pair of tits as we lurched through signals and jiggled over points half-way to Aberdeen before I had taken in her face. And then at her hotel in the evening she had said they were tender because she was pregnant and I had had to use all my strength to stop myself from squeezing their ripeness and burying my teeth in their magnificent flesh. My hands had trembled with the effort as I lifted and stroked them and masked my teeth with my lips as I bent to the nipple. I got her to promise to wet-nurse me just a little when her time came. In the event it was awkward for her to get over to my place in between feeds for the baby so she squeezed me some into a bottle. Usually I take my coffee black. I took it white that week.
Suddenly I noticed that Alison was looking at her breasts now too. She saw me watching her. She said, ‘Such pretty earrings, Julia.’ And she fondled the tiny pearl in Julia’s lobe.
I went to refill Alison’s glass again.
‘I’m not sure I ought.’
Obviously she was feeling the effect of her first smoke. ‘Then leave it,’ I said and filled it to in marxist the brim. ‘Doesn’t matter. ‘
She drank as Julia lit up. This was good. The hard edge of her composure was already gone. But she still retained an air of lady-like cool that tantalized me. Each movement she made had a-grace and economy that warned me of the depth of her control. At the same time she disdained any form of self consciousness, so that she never once appeared to make an effort or strive for an effect. She slid one foot out of her sandal by digging its heel into the floor, and with long slender hands she accepted the smoke languidly. Then she laid her head back again with the smallest yawn as though indicating a trifle of boredom. I wanted to wrench her knees apart and ram my fist tip to hear her cry out. But the waiting was good.
I spoke to Julia. ‘What are you so fraught about?’ ‘Well, I. Oh, you know me, I. ‘Julia blushed suddenly and looked down.
‘I think the new au pair has a lot to answer for.’ Alison rescued her. And she began to stroke Julia’s hair.
I watched them together entranced. As they in my ear began to ramble on about Elena, Athens and Samantha and... Julia had turned to her friend and begun to loosen the copper plait distractedly. There was something incestuous about this pair of Stefan’s women. It was as though his love had made them as familiar with each other’s hair, ears, hands, as sisters. Julia had laid her head on Alison’s shoulder, relaxing more with every fond movement that Alison made. I could not quite decide whether Alison’s physical reassurance sprang from love of Julia or whether she had suddenly understood what I demanded of the situation and had decided to go along with it.
